The Historical Establishment of SEATTA – 29 November 1996
The Southeast Asian Table Tennis Association (SEATTA) was officially established on 29 November 1996 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, marking a significant milestone in the regional development of the sport. The founding congress brought together representatives from across Southeast Asia, united by the vision of strengthening cooperation and elevating table tennis standards in the region.
At the inaugural meeting, Tan Sri Chan Kong Choy of Malaysia was appointed as the first President of SEATTA, with leaders from Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines, Indonesia, and Singapore joining the executive board. The newly formed federation immediately set ambitious goals: to organize more activities and competitions, and to provide a structured platform for youth and adult championships.
Thailand proposed hosting the first Southeast Asia Table Tennis Championships in 1998, with Indonesia expressing interest in staging the following year’s event. These early initiatives reflected the federation’s commitment to building a calendar of regional competitions that would nurture talent and foster unity among member nations.
The establishment of SEATTA also included the formation of specialized committees for technical development and rules governance, ensuring that the federation would operate with professionalism and align with international standards.
This historic moment laid the foundation for SEATTA’s enduring role in promoting table tennis across Southeast Asia. From its beginnings in Kuala Lumpur, the federation has grown into a vital regional body, dedicated to advancing the sport, supporting athletes, and strengthening collaboration among its member associations.
